Millcreek Officials Tow Cars from Road

January 25, 2013 - Millcreek supervisors followed through today with their threat to tow cars left parked in the streets.

Supervisors had previously warned residents to move cars out of the road during the winter so plows can get by.

Today they moved several cars not following the ordinance.

Township supervisors took action against cars parked in the streets, known as snowbirds.

"The ordinance states that in the case of a weather event such as in the one we're in now, vehicles must be removed from the roadway so plows can come and take care of the roads," said Cpl. Anthony Chimera, Millcreek Police Department.

Early Friday morning, crews were out notifying car owners who had their vehicle parked in the road.

Owners had a limited amount of time to move the snowbirds.

"We first tag your car and tell you you have 12 hours to remove your car from the roadway," Chimera said. "If after twelve hours pass and your vehicle has not been removed, the township will tow vehicle at owners cost."

On Friday afternoon, Chimera hit the streets along with tow trucks to remove those cars parked illegally.

Cars parked in the street aren't the only issue in the township during snow storms.

Supervisors say snow can't be thrown into the street from a snowblower.

"You can't put the snow back out on the road," said Joe Kujawa, Millcreek Township Supervisor. "It makes just as much of a mess as a parked car."

25 owners moved their cars after they received the notification.

Crews ended up towing 8 cars.

They will be on the lookout throughout the rest of the winter.

Comments

Well, they were warned to move them, it's hard enough for the crews to do the roads when there isn't any cars in their ways...
