More Gun Permits Than Ever Are Being Processed In Erie County

1/31/13

It seems lately that you can't turn on TV,or read a newspaper without seeing news about people being afraid their rights to bear arms will be taken away.

And because of that, concealed weapon permits have shot through the roof.

More people than ever are coming to the Erie County Courthouse to apply for their permits in numbers Erie County Sheriff Bob Merski has not seen before.

In the last 3 months of 2011, 1,149 gun applications were processed. In the last 3 months of 2012, an election year, 1,857 gun permit applications were processed.

for the entire year of 2011 3,765 gun permit applications were processed compared to 6,074 in 2012, an increase of 2309 applications.

Sheriff Merski says he believes there are a couple of reasons for the increase.  He said since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School back in December and the re-election of President Obama and fear that the public has about losing their constitutional right to bear arms, gun applications have shot through the roof.

Mary Pawlak is a realtor who got her gun permit for self protection. She said there are plenty of times she's alone with someone showing a house and at times she fears for her safety.
