Meadville Chemical Release, Residents React

watch video
Action news caught up with some people on Glenwood Avenue Friday evening who were just returning home after evacuating for the chemical spill situation and they agree the mid-day mishap had them a little anxious. Not everyone decided to leave the area, but those who did take the precautionary measures were happy to return home safely. After residents on Glenwood Avenue and Baldwin Street called officials complaining of a rotten egg smell, police officers warned a total of 128 people to evacuate throughout a block and a half radius in the northern part of Meadville. Only 19 people took a pit stop at the shelter set up by the American Red Cross at the First School District which means many Meadville residents took an unexpected afternoon visit to a friends or families houses. Residents agree it was a scary situation because it’s not everyday you have a police officer knocking on your door telling you to leave your home. "It was a little scary to see people come up in gas masks." "I though it was like a huge epidemic was happening or something I was kinda scared." Since this was the first day off school for Meadville students the evacuation put a little damper in the summer spirits but everyone was happy to return to their summertime activities like taking a dip in the pool and preparing for graduation parties. Most of the residents left their homes around 12:30 this Friday afternoon and got back around 4:30pm and officials are still investigating the situation.
