Crash into a Building Near E 12th and Franklin Ave
February 18, 2013
Erie Police and firefighters along with Emergycare paramedics responded to a call for a car into a building near the corner of East 12th and Franklin Avenue.
The accident happened just about 9 AM.
Dispatchers first said the car had crashed into a house there, but in moments the description was amended to "a gas company shanty". The structure is a brick building serving as a substation for gas service to the John Horan Apartments.
Before impacting the substation, police said the Toyota Corolla sheared off an evergreen and continued across traffic into the structure.
First responders quickly called for National Fuel Gas workers to come to the scene. The overturned vehicle had apparently crashed into some pipes in the building.
The driver of the vehicle was trapped under the dashboard, and had to be freed by emergency workers.
Police said the man was bleeding from a head injury as he was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment.
