There's more to being a good teacher than just teaching reading, writing, and arithmatic.
Golden Apple Award winning teachers often go beyond the academics to educate their students.
This week, we traveled to Westlake Middle School in Millcreek to honor one of those teachers.
You wouldn't know by looking at this classroom, But Mr. Andrew Gross is teaching these students music.
Mr Gross has been teaching music 21 years, the last 8 here at Westlake Middle School.
Andrew Gross, Golden Apple Award winner, said: "Music has been part of ... I get paid to do this."
Student nominator Anna Brink says music is often her escape from the realities of life, and she appreciates Mr. Gross teaching her about both life and music.
Anna Brink, student nominator, said: "He's a great teacher ... so much to say about life, so he deserves this more than anybody."
Mr. Gross: "It seems that I find myself ... real stories from teachers."
As we travel each week from school to school, a common denominator in Golden Apple Award winning teachers is their ability to teach more than academics.
