March 11, 2013

Hunger is on the rise in Pennsylvania and the Walmart Foundation is pledging $75,000 to make sure local children have enough to eat.

Second Harvest Food Bank has received a grant from Walmart, to assist with their local backpack program.

The program will help provide nutritious food to children and their families on weekends.

Some families depend on school lunches and after school meals during the week.

On the weekends, it can be difficult to keep three meals a day on the table.

The donation will help to send about 1,000 backpacks home with students in the Erie community each week.

That's so much cheaper than paying their employees a decent wage. But hey, this one-time gesture makes them look good.

{The donation will help to send about 1,000 backpacks home with students in the Erie community each week.} WHY do they need a backpack EVERY week? or do they bring home what's inside and then bring it back to school to refill? I'm not understanding this part...no one needs a new backpack every week...
