Soapbox Derby

watch video
Soapbox DerbyThe Erie All-American Soapbox Derby Race helped some kids satisfy their need for speed.

Some of the gravity-powered race cars can go as fast as 45 miles-per-hour.

The drivers are boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17.

More than 40 kids came out to get the thrill of the hill.

Organizers say the race is a family tradition that has gone one for decades.

Now they are trying to encourage a new generation of racers.

"This is a new track for all of us, and it's really quick and it's kind of hard to keep control," said Gerard Thompson, a racer.  "If you have good consistency, you should do really good," he added.

Saturday's race in Erie is part of a national soapbox tradition.  The first All-American race took place in Dayton, Ohio, in 1934.
