Don't Leave Your Running Vehicle Unattended... It's Against the Law
Especially this time of year, it's tempting to leave your car on when you're only running into the store to grab something, but guess what, it's illegal to leave your car unattended while running for any amount of time. It's so easy to leave your car running so it's nice and warm when you get back in, but with the keys in the ignition and the car unlocked, your car has just become a perfect target for auto-theft.
According to Erie Police, this time of year, the rate of stolen cars increases, and the majority of those thefts are happening right under your noses. It's so simple to park your car and run into the convenient store for a quick buy, all the while your car's on, it's warm inside, and it's just waiting for someone to take it.
Every year Erie police conduct a "Lock It or Lose It" campaign, handing out warnings and fines to those who are caught leaving their running vehicle all alone. Many people are taking part in this illegal activity, but might not even realize it.
So, you're probably wondering, what about remote car starters?? Those are the exception, with a remote starter, your car remains locked and your keys aren't in the ignition, preventing someone from stealing it.
You could be facing a fine if you're caught by police leaving your car running and unattended, but if you're caught by someone searching for a quick steal, you're facing a much greater loss.
