Steris to Move Manufacturing Jobs to Mexico

Hundreds of workers and many community leaders were stunned by an announcement from Steris. Steris is moving more than 450 manufacturing jobs to Mexico. The company says the move will happen in phases over the next 18 months and save Steris $20 million. 230 non-manufacturing jobs will remain here. The company produces sterilization equipment for the healthcare industry and has an overall workforce of about 5000 people. Steris bought out American Sterilizer ten years ago. Company officials say the plant on West 23rd Street has been their most expensive facility to operate.
