Local Businesses Booming from Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday is half football, and half celebration. Even if your favorite team isn't in the big game, people always find a way to make the night memorable, and that usually happens in the form of devouring chicken wings, pizza, and subs. In Erie, chicken wings are especially in demand.

"We have over 1400 wings ordered," Odis 12 owner Michael Miodis said. Odis 12 is the 5-time winner of Erie's Best Chicken Wings Cook-Off.

He's not sure he can even serve all of the people wanting wings.

"Our to-go orders are crazy. The phone's non-stop ringing," Odis said.

Making chicken wings may keep the customers happy, but you'd be surprised by how little of a profit local businesses make off of selling them.

"Everyone wants chicken wings. It's actually a shortage right now. The prices of chicken wings are up, the profit margin isn't high but it's what the people want, and we've got to give it to them," Odis said.

Co-owner of Steel City, Hope Broffman, agrees with Odis about keeping the customers happy, despite the low profit.

"It's for the fans, you have to do it," she said.

However, she says fewer fans are excited about this year's big game.

"A lot of people that I talk to who are local fans are like 'oh, if our teams aren't in it, then whatever.'"

However, she knows her go-to game-day foods, like Pittsburgh-style sandwiches, pizza, and wings, will sell just fine, and like the future Lombardi Trophy winner of tonight's game, she too will be winning.

It's a real shocker that the price of chicken wings all overthe USA went up just before Super Bowl, Isn't it? You have to expect the top commodity to go up just before something that is going to sell them big time, that's how all the greedy companies make their big profits, after all...and then it leaves all of the little places, like Odis' looking bad because they also, have to raise their prices just to serve their customers... I'm glad that Erie made lots of revenue for their business' etc. but sad because of the way they sometime's have to do it...
