UPMC Hamot and Wegmans gave back to the community today with its seventh annual "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" event, which offered health screenings for free or reduced prices.

The event offered free screenings by skilled nurses that included risk assessment, body mass index, and blood pressure. The event also offered $5 cholesterol screenings.

The event is held this time of year for American Heart Month.

Brandon Armella works in cardiovascular disease management for UPMC Hamot, and he says it is extremely important for this event to take place because heart disease affects so many people.

"Heart disease is a leading killer of men and women. It's better to stay on top of things, and know your risk factors," Armella said.

People of all ages came out to the event. Mary Rose and William Hogenmiller have been married for 65 years and wanted to check to make sure their heart health is up to par for the sake of their family.

"We want to see a lot of our grandchildren grow up," William said.

And while William and his wife walked away with a clean bill of health, UPMC did offer services for those who were high risk for heart disease.
