The first death from the flu has been reported in Erie County, and the number of known people with the flu is higher than normal at this time.

Erie County Health Department officials confirmed today that an individual 65 years or older has died from complications from the flu.

As of noon today, 318 known flu cases were reported in Erie County.

Doctors say the number of people with the flu is higher because not all cases are reported.

Doctors from Saint Vincent Health Center say the age group most affected by the influenza are young and elderly.

The age groups with the highest number of individuals with the flu are ages 2 to 17 with 88 cases, ages 26 to 49 have 83 cases reported and 65 and older have 59 cases.

There are ways you can help prevent the flu, including washing your hands and keeping your hands away from your face.

The ER at Saint Vincent has been busy, but doctors say you don't necessarily have to go to the emergency room.

Experts say it's not too late to get your flu shot.
