How do I hang art work?

There is a art to hanging artwork, whether it is a single piece over the sofa or a grouping following a staircase, there are some simple design tips you should follow.

#1 Make sure the art work is proportion to the wall space and surrounding pieces.   This is a common decorating faux pas, using art that is not in proportion.  Let's remove this piece and find another piece that is more appropriate in scale.  For example, when hanging artwork over this sofa, the decorating rule of thumb is that the piece should span about 2/3 of the width of the sofa.  We will replace the disproportionate piece with the right scale.

#2 The second design tip is to place the art work 54 inches from the floor to the center of the artwork you are placing.

#3 While grouping a collection of pictures or artwork. Keep in mind, your eye reads left to right like a book.  Anchor your grouping with the strong piece on the left side whether it is larger in scale or a greater contrast.

When using a mix of different pictures find a common element, such a subject matter, frame style, color of frame, or mat. This will provide a cohesive look.

Mirrors, just like artwork, need to have special consideration when placing.  Used properly, they can make a room seem larger and add more light.  But please be conscious of what it is reflecting.
