How can I mix differnet woods in the same space?

watch video

Our philosophy, is that your home is a reflection of your individual taste and of what you have collected over the years. Whether it is a family heirloom, or a great consignment piece that you purchased. The furniture pieces in most homes are a mix of  different styles and wood finishes.

The trick to mixing different wood finishes in the same space is balance of the scale of the pieces.  For example, all the pieces of this room are substantial, they are not delicate in nature so they work together. Another important factor to keep in mind is the ratio of pieces in the room.  The design principal of odd numbers come into play in this situation.  We have paired 3 dark pieces,  this is our odd number, and we have one light wood rustic tv armoire and one medium wood end table in the room.  The medium wood transitions us  from dark to light.

We have also balanced the room with the large pieces on opposite ends of the room, you do not want to group all your large pieces toward the same side of the space. It will feel unbalanced .

A painted piece of furniture is a great way to break up two many of the same wood tones.  For example, we could have switched out this ottoman for a painted coffee table.  This would add visual interest.  This whimsical and fun piece can make any room feel less formal.

Using a professional decorator can save you time and money and help you avoid costly mistakes.  For example, buying furniture that is too large, picking out the wrong paint color and trying 3 or 4 colors before finding the one that works, or not having the best functional placement of your furniture and function of your space.
